he sundrenched George P. Schultz Great Hall of the United States Institute
of Peace (USIP) was the setting for Washington Week’s annual luncheon
focusing on diplomacy and foreign policy. USIP President and CEO Lise Grande
welcomed the group with an overview of USIP’s more than 300 peacebuilding initiatives
worldwide, covering 19 conflict zones in 90 countries. “When I worked for the United
Nations, I served on the front lines in 12 wars. I don’t know anyone who has ever been
in a war that did not profoundly believe that peace was a better option,” she remarked.
Numerous State Department and USIP officials joined the delegates over lunch to discuss
the many facets of statecraft, global policymaking and careers in Foreign Service. State
Department Ambassador Dereck Hogan, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the
Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, and Dr. Michael Yaffe, vice president of the
Middle East North Africa Center at USIP recounted their notable international experiences
