Remember to Always Look Up

enator Shelley Moore Capito gazed appreciatively at her surroundings in the
rotunda of the National Archives as she began. “Who gets to have dinner with
the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution?
They are all living documents, and they are living right here with us tonight.” She
shared that she was proud to be speaking before America’s future leaders and told
the students that a good approach is to work for a local official or candidate who
champions issues that you believe in. The first female Senator in West Virginia history
offered this advice: “Most people in the public eye are great talkers, but the real gift is to
be a good listener. If you are not listening, you are probably not going to be a good leader.”
She also counseled the delegates to “look up” both in the philosophical and pragmatic sense.
“Remember to observe and appreciate your surroundings and make old fashioned eye-to-eye
